Alberta

Brief Overview

Health Canada classifies nicotine-containing e-cigarettes as new drugs under the Food and Drug Regulations. As such, there are restrictions on their sale, advertisement, promotion, sponsorship, importation and manufacturing. Products without nicotine are not regulated.

In Alberta there is no universal provincial legislation on the usage of e-cigarette products, although some municipalities, (i.e. Cold Lake, Red Deer, and Bonnyville) have bylaws to restrict e-cigarette use in public places.

Alberta has a thriving vaping scene and an abundance of retail stores can be found mainly in Calgary and Edmonton, with a smaller number of shops available throughout other parts of the state.
