With battery safety being such an important part of vaping, it’s important to make sure you are charging your batteries safely to keep them healthy and serviceable. Some factors to keep in mind when choosing a charger include:
- Does the charger have overcharge protection, or better yet, can you set the maximum charge manually? Setting the maximum charge to 4.1V will reduce stress on the battery, giving a slightly longer overall life to your 18650’s
- Does the charger have a screen to display current charge levels? If your device doesn’t have a screen or over discharge protection (like a mech mod or unregulated mod) then it’s a good idea to have a readout on your charger to make sure you know what charge your batteries are being taken down to on a daily basis and to try to fine tune your habits to ensure your aren’t stressing your batteries too much. It’s recommended you recharge at 3.2V, discharging to or slightly below 2.5V occasionally won’t kill your batteries, but going below 2V for too long can do permanent damage. The lower you go, the faster the voltage will drop.
- Can you set the current of the charger to control charging speed? You need to check your batteries rating before playing with this, but if you’re in a rush many 18650’s can handle up to 4A, but if you have the time (buy some spare batteries so you are won’t be tempted to rush things) charging at 0.5A can extend the life of your batteries and ensure they don’t overheat while charging.
- Does the charger offer ‘battery recovery’? Battery recovery may be able to bring some batteries back from the dead when they’ve been overdischarged, it’s still possible they’ll be too far gone, but can be worth trying if they didn’t spend too long below 2V. For example, it’s almost impossible to bring back a battery that’s spent a week below 1.5V and even if you do, it may no longer be safe to use it.
