Philip Morris Announces New Year’s Resolution
Tobacco giant Philip Morris have announced their New Year’s resolution: “We’re trying to give up cigarettes.”
Philip Morris is known for making some of the biggest brands in the cigarette industry, most notably Marlboro. PMI has recently taken out full page ads in various newspapers in the UK stating that it is finally their turn to give up cigarettes.
Their ‘manifesto‘ entitled “Designing a Smoke-Free Future” states that millions of people are already using their smoke-free alternative products to get away from cigarettes and that this will be the new course for their company moving forward.
Some people have dismissed these ads as nothing more than a PR stunt from the tobacco company, but PMI have made similar policy changes in the past year ever since announcing they will be moving to ‘phase out‘ traditional tobacco products in the coming years, and have spent roughly $2.5 billion in R&D on smokeless products to date.
Despite all of the evidence showing that vaping is vastly safer than smoking, the World Health Organization have advised governments to reject Philip Morris’ plan to set up a Foundation for a Smoke-Free World.
Whether tobacco companies can be given the benefit of the doubt or not is up to you, but I personally believe they have everything to gain from their customers living longer, healthier lives, and it seems like they think so too.
